OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss dropped a pair of games to Florida on Saturday, 9-0 and 10-2, in the second weekend of Southeastern Conference action at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
With the losses, the Rebels remain winless in SEC play with an 0-5 mark, while they dropped to 11-19 overall. Florida moved to 22-10 on the year and 2-3 in league action.
In game one, a five-run sixth inning sealed the 9-0 Florida victory, despite seven hits from the Rebels.
Sophomore left fielder Kayla Mosley and freshman catcher Michelle May each went 2-for-3 in the contest, while Rebecca McIntire, Lisa Conchos and Lauren Rowe had one hit apiece.
Florida jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning on a Shelley Stevens RBI single through the right side, giving the Gators a 1-0 lead.
The Gators added to their lead in the top of the fourth, without getting a hit. Senior right-hander Dana Brill (5-6) loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batter, then Lauren Roussell walked to give Florida a 2-0 lead. Brill avoided further damage by striking out the next batter, forcing a groundout to third and then striking out the next Gator for the third out.
A two-run home run by the Gator's leading power hitter, Kristen Butler, in the next inning gave Florida a four-run advantage.
The Rebels threatened in the bottom half of the fifth frame. With two outs, Mosley singled to left, followed by a walk to McIntire, but they were unable to push any runs across before the Gators exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth.
Brill finished the contest with a complete game and allowed just four hits, but gave up six earned runs out of nine total, walked eight batters and struck out nine. She continues her hot strikeout pitching, with 31 now in her last three games.
Florida's Stacey Nelson (7-4) earned the win, going the complete six innings as well, and allowing seven hits but no runs, while striking out four and issuing one free pass.
Game 2:
Game two started off with a bang for Florida. After a leadoff bunt single by Kim Waleszonia, Lindsey Cameron hit a deep home run to left-center field to give Florida the early 2-0 lead.
The Gator offense continued to roll in the second and third frames, adding seven more runs on seven hits to take a 9-0 advantage. The second inning included a two-run triple by Lauren Roussell.
Lefty starter Mary Jane Callahan (5-11) did not make it out of the third inning after giving up seven earned runs out of nine total. Brill came back to the circle to close out the final 2 1/3 and allowed just one more run, while striking out four.
After Florida added one more in the top of the fourth to make it 10-0, the Rebels got the bats going in the bottom of the frame, collecting two runs on four hits, including RBI singles by May and right fielder Brittany Warner to cut the deficit to 10-2.
Kayla Mosley recorded her second straight two-hit game, bumping her season batting average up by 83 points in one day, from .167 to .250.
Florida starter Stacey Stevens (9-2) gave up five Rebel hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out five in five innings.
The Rebels and Gators will face off one more time this season, weather permitting, as the teams are scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. tomorrow. There is an 80-90 percent chance of rain, so fans should bring their umbrellas.
