Men’s Golf Heads to the Aloha State to Close Out Fall Season

10/27/2019 | Men's Golf

EWA BEACH, Hawaii – The No. 41 Ole Miss men's golf team heads to Hawaii for the Hoakalei Country Club Invitational (Oct. 27-29) to close out the fall season.

The Rebels will compete at Hoakalei Country Club, which will be playing 7,444 yards and par 72, on the island of Oahu. The event will mark the seventh-straight season the Rebels have traveled to the island of Hawaii to close out their fall season. Ole Miss finished eighth after going 15-under (276-295-278--849) last fall at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational at Makai Golf Club.

The 20-team tournament field consists of the host school Hawaii, No. 10 Louisville, No. 32 East Tennessee State, Abilene Christian, Army, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Denver, Idaho, Louisiana, Loyola Marymount, Marquette, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico State, Sam Houston State, San Diego, UMKC and UTSA.

Head coach Chris Malloy is bringing six Rebels to compete. The top four of the lineup remains unchanged from the last two events, with Jackson Suber playing as the No. 1, followed by Sarut Vongchaisit, Jack Gnam and Veeti Mahonen. Charlie Miller will occupy the final spot in the lineup, while Brody Blackmon will compete as an individual.

"It's always exciting to end our fall season in a place like Hawaii," Malloy said. "These guys have done a tremendous job working their tails off all fall semester, and I look for them to end it on a high note."

Suber has paced the Rebels in scoring every event this fall with four top-5 finishes. The sophomore has gone par-or-better in all but two rounds this fall while leading the team in birdies with 55. Suber is fourth in the SEC in scoring (69.50). During his freshman season, Suber competed as an individual at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, going 70-70-66—206 his first time competing for Ole Miss in Hawaii.

Vongchaisit earned his third top-20 finish of the fall at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The sophomore has been a steady No. 2 player for the Rebels this fall with two top-10 finishes and three tournaments where he has finished par-or-better.

Gnam stays in the Rebels' top three after shooting par-or-better all three rounds during his last outing in Tennessee (72-70-72—214). The sophomore has appeared in the lineup every event this fall.

Mahonen will occupy the No. 4 spot. He ranks fifth in the SEC in scoring for freshman (72.50).

Miller will make his season debut playing as the No. 5. Miller earned a runner-up finish playing as an individual at the TVA Credit Union Invite earlier in the week, going 3-under (69-72—141).

Blackmon will compete as an individual after a top-6 finish at the TVA Credit Union Invite with Miller. The senior shot back-to-back 72s to finish at even par for the event.

First round play begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. CT on Monday. The Rebels will be paired with Sam Houston State, San Diego and Cal Poly. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
