Rebels Will Compete Against 13 teams at Golf Club of Houston

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men's golf team is headed to the Lone Star State, opening up its spring season at the All-American Intercollegiate (Feb. 17-19).

The event will take place at the Golf Club of Houston, host of the PGA Tour's Houston Open, which will be playing 7,096 and a par 72.

The Rebels will compete against the host school University of Houston, Rice, No. 37 Baylor, Charlotte, Lamar, Louisiana, McNeese State, No. 49 Ole Miss, New Mexico State, North Texas, Sam Houston State, No. 34 South Carolina, UT Arlington, UTSA.

Head coach Chris Malloy is bringing six Rebels to compete at the event including seniors Beau Briggs and Josh Seiple, sophomore Cecil Wegener, and freshmen Jackson Suber, Jack Gnam and Sarut Vongchaisit.

"I'm very excited to see us jump back into tournament play," Malloy said. "These guys are tired of just playing against each other around here and are eager to see some other competition. It's always an exciting time of year because you really don't know what to expect."

Beau Briggs is coming into the spring ranked second in the conference in stroke average (69.0). The senior closed out the fall with back-to-back career-best finishes, a third-place showing in Nashville (67-71-71—209) and placing fourth in Hawaii behind a career-low 66 in the first round. Briggs is currently ranked eighth in the Arnold Palmer Cup standings. The top six in the ranks at the end of the spring will represent the United States at the Alotian Club in June.

Jackson Suber is second on the team in stroke average (71.93) and leads the team in birdies with 48. The freshman finished runner-up in his first ever collegiate event and appeared in all five fall tournaments, four of them in the Ole Miss lineup.

Josh Seiple enters his final spring as a Rebel having appeared in the lineup in four of the five fall events, the lone individual play being a personal-best fourth place at Erin Hills (70-72-71—213). The senior finished tied for 11th last year at the All-American Intercollegiate with a career-low 54-hole score of 210 (-6), helping Ole Miss place third as a team (276-291-274-841). The Rebels' 72-hole total at last year's tournament was the seventh-lowest in school history.

Cecil Wegener comes into the spring as the only Rebel to appear in the lineup in all five fall events. The sophomore is third on the team in stroke average (72.43).

Two freshmen round out the lineup. Jack Gnam will be competing in his fourth tournament as a Rebel, while Sarut Vongchaisit makes his second appearance in the Red and Blue.

"More than anything, I want to see us be tough mentally on the course," Malloy said. "We did a poor job of that in the fall and these guys have worked to address that in the off season. I look for us to handle adversity better."

"We have three true freshmen playing in the tournament this week, so that's always exciting as a coach to see the young guys stepping up."

Last year at the event, the Rebels closed with the fourth-lowest round in program history, a final round 274 (-14) to move up two spots on the final day.

First round is set to begin Sunday morning at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
