Freshmen Trio Triumphs but Rebels Stifled at No. 29 South Carolina

3/10/2019 | Men's Tennis

Junk, Kranic and Soren Hain all pick up victories Sunday

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A trio of victorious freshmen were not enough for Ole Miss Men's Tennis to overcome talented No. 29 South Carolina, falling 4-3 Sunday at the Carolina Tennis Center.

Rookies Jan Soren Hain, Simon Junk and Karlo Kranic picked up wins for Ole Miss (8-8, 0-4 SEC), but a doubles win and a pair of ranked Gamecocks prevented the Rebels from picking up their first league victory.

South Carolina (11-2, 1-1 SEC) jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage after outscoring the Rebels 6-3 twice in doubles. No. 12 Paul Jubb and No. 88 Daniel Rodrigues would grow the lead to 3-0 with a pair of two-set winners, but soon after, Hain got the Rebels on the board.

Hain picked up his first career SEC victory with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over South Carolina's Jake Beasley.

The momentum was halted, however, when Fabian Fallert couldn't mount a comeback after falling behind 1-0 on Court 3. The Gamecocks clinched the win, but the match played out.

This put Junk and Kranic in the spotlight to pick up individual wins. Both stepped up, forcing third-set tiebreakers and won the finales in dominating fashion.

Junk won 6-2 in set two and rolled to a 10-5 advantage to close the match for his first SEC win of his career.

Kranic opened his match with a 6-7 (5) heartbreaker but responded with a 6-2 edge. He breezed through a 10-2 tiebreaker to win his second straight SEC match.
