Sophomore Julia Johnson Finishes Top-5 Individually
CASA DE CAMPO, Dominican Republic – The No. 42 Ole Miss women's golf team finished the Tar Heel Classic Saturday afternoon in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic.
The Rebels placed fifth as a team at 9-over (288-294-291—873), while Julia Johnson picked up a top-5 individual finish.
Ole Miss shot a final round 3-over 291 on Saturday to stay in the top-5 as a team. No. 12 Wake Forest took home the team title at 23-under par. The Rebels were fifth in the field in birdies (40) and seventh in total pars (127).
"We had a great spring break here in the Dominican and it was a special treat to be able to spend some time in such a beautiful place," assistant coach Zack Byrd said. "I'm very proud of the progress we made over the last two weeks. We played 54 holes of smart golf this week and really did a great job of missing the ball in the right spot.
"We have a quick turnaround for Auburn next week so we will continue to focus on the same things in practice. We get a day to relax on the beach which will be great for us as the next three weeks are very busy. We are very close to playing great golf and are trending in the right direction at the right time."
Johnson kept up her hot streak into the final day, firing a final round 1-under 71 with 13 pars and three birdies, two coming on her last two holes. The sophomore finished tied for fifth, her third top-5 of the season and seventh of her career. Johnson went 70-72-71—213 and led the team in pars with 41 in 54 holes.
"It feels great to put another solid round of golf together," Johnson said. "Getting a top-5 in this field is a huge momentum booster heading into Auburn. I knew I had to make some birdies down the stretch and to finish with two in a row felt great."
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay moved into the top-15 thanks to a final round 1-over 73. The freshman tied her best 54-hole tournament as a Rebel at 3-over (72-74-73—219) and notched her fourth top-20 finish this season.
Conner Beth Ball moved up eight spots on the final day with a 1-over 73, including a birdie on the second to last hole at the par 3 No. 5. Ball led the team in birdies with nine total during the tournament
Kennedy Swann made her Rebel debut in The Dominican, going 75-76-74—225 and tying for 39th. The junior transfer was second on the team in birdies with eight.
Macy Somoskey, her first time in the starting five for Ole Miss, finished tied for 39th alongside Swann, a career-best finish. The freshman shot shot a career-best even par 72 in the first round.
The Rebels return to the course Saturday, March 23, for the Evans Derby Experience in Auburn, Alabama.
