Rebels Travel to Puerto Rico to Begin Spring Season
RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The Ole Miss men's golf team begins the spring season with a trip to Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Classic (Feb. 16-18) in Rio Grande.
The three-day event will take place at the Rio Mar Resort's River Course, which will be playing 6,902 yards and par 72.
The No. 35 Rebels will compete against the host school Purdue, No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 19 Georgia, No. 24 Clemson, No. 28 Tennessee, Alabama, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Iowa, Maryland, Marquette, NC State, and Ohio State.
Competing for the first time since a runner-up finish at the Hoakalei Country Club Invitational in Hawaii last October, Ole Miss starts its spring season, which features five tournaments before the SEC Championship in St. Simons Island, Georgia (April 22-26), outside of the continental United States.
Head coach Chris Malloy is bringing six Rebels to compete at the event. Jackson Suber will led the team in the No. 1 position, followed by Sarut Vongchaisit, Charlie Miller, Veeti Mahonen and Brody Blackmon. Jack Gnam will play as an individual.
"We are extremely excited to start the spring season and finally get back on the road," Malloy said. "Our guys ended the fall season on a high note and are looking to build on that momentum. We have had a good few weeks of practice, and I'm looking forward to seeing what these guys do this week."
Suber comes into the spring with the fourth-lowest scoring average in the conference (69.87). He finished no worse than tied for 19th this fall with six rounds in the 60s, leading the Rebels on the leaderboard in four of the five tournaments.
Vongchaisit appeared in the lineup every event last fall. He cracked the top 25 in every outing, highlighted by a career-best finish at the Windon Memorial Classic where he tied for ninth.
Mahonen ended the fall as the SEC's fifth-ranked freshman in terms of scoring average (71.87). He ended his first fall season in the Red and Blue with a career finish, tying for sixth overall in Hawaii thanks to three under-par rounds (68-71-69).
Miller appeared in one event in the fall and made the most of it, notching a top-20 finish at the Hoakalei Country Club Invitational. The Jackson, Mississippi, native began his sophomore campaign with a career-best 7-under 65 in the first round.
Blackmon rounds out the starting five for the Rebels. The senior ended the fall with a top-25 finish in Hawaii, finishing under par following 54 holes of play.
Gnam, competing as an individual, appeared in all five events in the fall. He earned a career-best finish at the Windon Memorial Classic, tying for ninth.
The first round is set to begin Sunday morning with a 6 a.m. CT shotgun start. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
