Rebels Shoot Par-or-Better All Three Rounds, Finish at 8-under

RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped up play at the Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday. The Rebels finished in sixth place after a final round 2-under 286.

Ole Miss went par-or-better in all three rounds of competition, finishing 8-under as a team (288-282-286—856). The Rebels were one of just six teams to finish under par for the tournament. No. 3 Georgia Tech won the team title at 32-under (282-268-282—832). Ole Miss ended the classic as the leaders in par-3 scoring (+4).

"It was a good three days overall," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Our goal was to win this week. We certainly didn't do that, but with it being the first tournament of the spring season, we have plenty of positives to build on. We talk a lot as a group about winning championships and being as good as we can be, and we have a long way to go to do that. Certainly, I do think this is a step in the right direction, guys hopefully got a little bit of confidence as we get into more tournament play."

Sarut Vongchaisit led the Rebels on the leaderboard, tying for 21st overall. Vongchaisit went par-or-better in all three rounds (70-72-71—213) to finish 3-under for the tournament. The sophomore was second in the field in total pars with 41 and has finished inside the top-24 in every outing this season. During his final round, Vongchaisit birdied two of his first six holes and did not commit a miscue until his 10th hole of the day. He ended the day 1-under thanks to third birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars.

Charlie Miller moved up 14 spots into a tie for 28th after a final round 3-under 69. Miller went 2-under on the tough back nine Tuesday, before going bogey-free on the front with a birdie on the par-4 fifth. The sophomore was second on the team in birdies with 12, five coming on the final day. Miller went 76-70-69—215 to finish at 1-under, his second straight tournament under par dating back to last fall.

Jackson Suber carded a 3-over 75 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 32nd. After rounds of 71-70 the first two days, Suber finished at even par for the tournament. The sophomore got off to a good start on the final day, going bogey-free the first 14 holes with two birdies, but a quadruple bogey on No. 1 proved costly. He led the team in birdies with 13.

Veeti Mahonen ended with a final round 1-under 71 to tie for 37th. His final 18 featured four birdies with three of them coming on par 5s. The freshman put together a 1-over showing, going 71-75-71—217.

Brody Blackmon finished in the top-50 at 6-over, going 76-70-76—222. The senior had a rough four-hole stretch but responded with two birdies and five pars over his final seven holes.

The Rebels return to the course, March 1-3, for the Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
