Rebels Stay International for Second Event of the Spring
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico - The No. 32 Ole Miss men's golf team heads to the Cabo Collegiate (Mar. 1-3) for the second outing of the spring, making it the eighth-straight year the Rebels have been to the tournament in Mexico.
The 2020 running of the Cabo Collegiate will take place at a new venue this year when it's contested at the Cabo del Sol's Cove Club Golf Course.
Ole Miss will compete against one of the strongest fields in college golf, with 14 out of 15 teams ranked in the top 50 of Golfstat's team rankings. The field consists of No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 9 Arizona State, No. 13 Baylor, No. 14 Arizona, No. 20 Vanderbilt, No. 25 Oklahoma State, No. 29 California, No. 30 LSU, No. 35 Stanford, No. 39 Houston, No. 42 Alabama, No. 47 Florida State, No. 50 Arkansas, and Rice.
"This is the start of a two-tournament stretch that we have been looking forward to for quite a while," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Our guys have had a great week of preparation and are excited to get going."
The travel party remains unchanged from the Rebels' trip to the Puerto Rico Classic to start the spring (Feb. 16-18), but Jack Gnam takes over the No. 5 spot after playing as an individual in Puerto Rico. The starting five consists of all underclassmen. Sarut Vongchaisit will be in the No. 1 position, followed by Jackson Suber, Charlie Miller, Veeti Mahonen and Gnam. Senior Brody Blackmon will play as an individual.
Vongchaisit led the Rebels in the first event of the spring, tying for 21st with three rounds of par-or-better (70-72-71). The sophomore has been playing consistent golf and has finished inside the top 25 in every tournament this season. Vongchaisit is ninth in the conference in scoring average (70.72).
Suber remains in the lineup after an even par performance in Puerto Rico (71-70-75—216). He is fifth in the SEC in scoring average (70.22) and has led the Rebels on the leaderboard in four out of the six tournaments this season.
Miller makes the starting five for the third straight event after tying for 28th (-1) at the Puerto Rico Classic, including a final round 3-under 69 that was the low round of the tournament for Ole Miss. The sophomore has gone under par in both tournaments he has played in this season.
Mahonen comes in as the fifth-ranked freshman in the SEC in terms of scoring average (71.94). The Kirkkonummi, Finland native has appeared in every event this season for Ole Miss.
Gnam rounds out the starting five after playing as an individual in Puerto Rico to kick off his spring. The sophomore has played in all six tournaments this season, joining each lineup throughout the fall.
