Anna Elkin Broke Ole Miss Record in the Mile at 4:46.23

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field senior Anna Elkin took down the school record in the mile and several Rebels recorded high national performances to conclude Vanderbilt's Commodore Indoor on Saturday.

Elkin took second place in the mile at a 13-second PR of 4:46.23, resetting Maddie King's 2019 record of 4:46.45 on the same oversized track at Vanderbilt. Elkin went from not ranking on the all-time top-15 to the top spot with her performance today, which also currently puts her at No. 9 in the NCAA. Sophomore Loral Winn kept a close pace to Elkin, taking third place at a six-second PR of 4:52.79 – No. 13 all-time and No. 15 in the NCAA at the moment.

The Rebel men's distance runners in the 800-meter had a successful day of their own, with junior Baylor Franklin and senior Everett Smulders taking the top-two spots for Ole Miss. Franklin, part of the Rebels' SEC Champion distance medley relay squad in 2020, won at a three-second career best of 1:48.61 – currently the No. 2 time in the nation and the sixth-best in program history. Smulders was not far behind, finishing runner-up at a two-second PR of 1:48.75, which ranks fourth nationally and seventh all-time at Ole Miss.

Ole Miss also received an event win from freshman Samara McConnell in the women's pole vault. McConnell showed no freshman jitters in her first collegiate meet, clearing 3.95m (12-11.50) on her first attempt at the bar for the victory. Her height Saturday puts her into a tie for the eighth-best in Ole Miss history, in addition to currently sitting No. 23 in the NCAA. Sophomore Lyndsey Reed had a solid day as well, finishing runner-up at 3.85m (12-07.50), while freshman Alex Brooks finished 10th at 3.65m (11-11.75), the 11th-best height in program history.

All-American junior Brandee Presley notched a runner-up finish in her first race of 2021, clocking 7.37 in the 60-meter dash final. That time ranks No. 10 in the NCAA at the moment, and was an improvement over her No. 2 qualifying prelim time of 7.44.

Ole Miss had representation in the men's 60-meter dash final as well. Senior Elijah Dryer had the top prelim time of the day at 6.81, and ended up taking runner-up honors in the final at 6.83. Freshman Ryan Star was consistent in his first meet as a Rebel, running 6.91 in both the prelim and the final, where he finished fifth. Fellow freshman Tristyn Wooley missed out on joining them in the final by one-hundredth of a second at 7.01.

Veteran men's distance runners Robinson Snider and Ben Savino each had career days in the men's 3K to open their 2021 seasons. Snider clocked a huge 19-second PR at 8:12.56 to finish runner-up, currently No. 12 in the NCAA and No. 15 all-time. Savino was not far behind in third at 8:13.20, a 13-second PR that has him No. 13 in the nation.

In the women's 3K, junior Victoria Simmons had a large improvement herself, finishing runner-up at an 11-second best of 9:49.90 (No. 31 NCAA). Sophomore Ryann Helmers finished third in her first track meet as a Rebel at 9:52.70.

The Ole Miss throwers followed up an impressive open from the weight throwers on Day One with a solid opening effort in the shot put Saturday. On the women's side, three Rebels made the final, led by Tedreauna Britt in fourth at 15.32m (50-03.25) and Jasmine Mitchell in fifth at 14.98m (49-01.75). Daniel Viveros and Danny Guiliani represented on the men's side, finishing back-to-back in third and fourth at 17.24m (56-06.75) and 16.68m (54-08.75), respectively.

Up next for Ole Miss is the Woo Pig Classic on Jan. 22, the first of four trips to Arkansas this indoor season.
