Track & Field Finally Returns Home for Ole Miss Classic

3/25/2021 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss track & field will once again know what it's like to compete at home when it breaks a spell of 713 days at this weekend's Ole Miss Classic on March 26-27. Action will begin Friday with the hammer at 3 p.m. CT, with the remainder of the meet scheduled for Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. CT.

MEET NOTES

• A total of six schools will be in competition alongside the Rebels: Illinois State, Indiana State, Memphis, Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky.

• In accordance with the State of Mississippi's latest executive orders, Ole Miss Athletics has announced updated attendance plans for track & field this spring.

• After player guest lists have been received from participating teams, priority admission will be offered to a select group of supporters through the Ole Miss Podium Club. Once those RSVPs are secured, all remaining spots will be offered to the general public on a first come, first served basis at the gates.

• Fans are required to wear a face covering upon entry into the facility, while in transit around the stadium and may only remove them when at their seat. All other previously announced COVID-19 safety measures remain in place.

• The 2017 season was the first for the renovated Ole Miss Track & Field Complex, which received $7.2 million in upgrades and can seat 1,500 spectators in its new design.

• Ole Miss is coming off its first outdoor meet of the season at Auburn's Tiger Track Classic. In two days of competition, the Rebels won four titles and had several other record book worthy performances.

WOMEN'S NOTES

• All-American sophomore Jasmine Mitchell was recently named SEC Newcomer of the Week, a new award added only for the 2021 season to honor student-athletes who were on the roster as freshmen during the canceled 2020 outdoor season. Mitchell, who is already a two-time All-American indoors, opened her outdoor career in strong fashion at Auburn's Tiger Track Classic last weekend, posting three top-10 finishes in each of her throwing events. Chief among them was a win in the shot put, where she launched an overall career-best 16.27m (53-04.50) – the fifth-best throw in school history. That throw also currently has her at No. 7 in the NCAA, No. 3 in the NCAA East Region and ranks atop the SEC leaderboard.

• Mitchell also had solid outings in the hammer and discus, finishing fifth in the hammer at 58.38m/191-06 (No. 5 in Ole Miss history), and 10th in the discus at 43.02m/141-02, the 11th-best ever at Ole Miss.

• Other Ole Miss throwers having strong outdoor openers included Tedreauna Britt with a win in the discus at 53.97m/177-01 (11th NCAA) and a one-inch PR in the shot put at 15.82m/51-11 (17th NCAA), and Shey Taiwo with a runner-up in the hammer at 63.38m/207-11 (12th NCAA).

• Ole Miss currently has two top-10 pole vaulters in the NCAA in Lyndsey Reed and Samara McConnell, who both cleared 4.07m (13-04.25) at Auburn last week that puts both of them into a tie for eighth nationally. Furthermore, McConnell currently leads all SEC freshmen and ranks second nationally among freshmen in the pole vault.

• Rebel senior great Kieshonna Brooks returns for her final season of competition after missing what would have been her final year outdoors in 2020. Brooks had a solid welcome back to action at Auburn, posting fourth-place finishes in both the 100-meter hurdles (13.79) and long jump (5.91m/19-04.75). Brooks is the national record holder in her native Saint Kitts & Nevis in the heptathlon at 5,338 points, the fifth-best tally in Ole Miss history.

• All-American Brandee Presley opened her outdoor season with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter dash at Auburn, running 11.41 in the process. She ranks fourth in the NCAA at this early point of the season.

MEN'S NOTES

• All-American jumper Allen Gordon kept his busy pace up at Auburn last week, winning the long jump at a strong, wind-legal open of 7.70m/25-03.25 before taking runner-up in the high jump at 2.15m (7-00.50). In the NCAA he currently ranks fourth and third in those events, respectively, and he is also currently the only athlete nationally to rank top-four in each.

Kenney Broadnax completed his full comeback to the track following a heartbreaking injury indoors in 2020, running his first 110-meter hurdles since the 2019 NCAA East Regional at Auburn last week. Broadnax was the runner-up at a career-best 13.90 (+2.7), the fifth-best time in Ole Miss history and the best by a Rebel since 2015. He currently ranks No. 6 in the NCAA.

• Ole Miss also claims two top-15 men's pole vaulters after a good start at Auburn. Peyton Weissmann won at 5.20m/17-00.75 (No. 9 NCAA), while Cole Colozzo succeeded in his first meet action since indoors 2020 with a runner-up finish at 5.10m/16-08.75 (No. 15 NCAA).

• A trio of Rebel men's sprinters had excellent opens at Auburn: Elijah Dryer took third in the 100-meter dash (10.51, 21st NCAA), Tristyn Wooley was runner-up in the 200-meter dash (21.13, 18th NCAA), and Isaiah Teer was top-10 in both, with his 100-meter PR of 10.56 currently ranking 32nd.

Daniel Viveros shined in his first outdoor shot put of his Ole Miss career, launching the third-best throw in school history to finish runner-up at Auburn. His toss of 18.38m (60-03.75) puts him at No. 10 in the NCAA.

Joseph Benedetto had a huge PR in the hammer at Auburn, finishing fourth at 64.60m (211-11) – the third-best throw in school history that also ranks 12th nationally at the moment.

TEAM NOTES

• Ole Miss is in year six under head coach Connie Price-Smith, who has led the Rebels to new heights in her time in Oxford with seven NCAA top-25 team finishes, four NCAA individual titles, 39 SEC individual titles and 98 First or Second-Team All-American awards. In 20 years as a head coach at both Ole Miss and Southern Illinois dating back to 2002, Price-Smith has collected 12 NCAA event titles and mentored 167 All-Americans on the track.
