Baseball Opens Weekend With Game One Loss to Iowa

3/1/2024 | Baseball

BY JEFF ROBERSON

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss and Iowa started their three-game series in Oxford with a lot of runs scored but also quite a few runners stranded. Both teams had several more opportunities than the 13-7 final score, which went the Hawkeyes' way, would indicate.

Iowa stranded nine on the bases, while 17 Rebels were left aboard. On the flip side, Rebel pitchers struck out 16 Iowa batters, and the Hawkeyes struck out 14 Rebels.

Ole Miss took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when the Rebels used the bunt game to make something happen against Iowa right-handed starter Brody Brecht. After Treyson Hughes singled, Brayden Randle reached on a bunt. Ethan Groff bunted and Brecht committed an error on the throw to load the bases. Andrew Fischer walked to score Hughes. But two strikeouts and a pop up followed, and further damage to the Hawkeyes was eliminated.

In the top of the fourth, Iowa's Sam Petersen walked, and Raider Tello sent one out of the park in right to give the Hawkeyes their first lead. It was 2-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth.

The Rebels again loaded the bases, but this time got no runs. After Campbell Smithwick walked, Luke Hill reached on a fielder's choice as Smithwick was out at second. Hughes singled and Brayden Randle was hit by a Brecht pitch to put Rebels on every base. A strikeout and a ground out ended the inning, and Iowa still led 2-1 through four complete.

The Hawkeyes stretched their lead in the top of the fifth. After the bases were loaded with a walk, single, and intentional walk, a two-out double by Davis Cop cleared the bases, and the Hawkeyes led 5-1.

After two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Ethan Lege homered over the wall in left to cut into the Iowa lead. It was 5-2 Hawkeyes after five complete.

A Reese Moore single with two Hawkeyes aboard in the seventh added to the Iowa lead to make it 7-2. In the bottom of the eighth, Ole Miss made things more than interesting. When the inning ended, the Rebels had tied the game.

For the third inning in the contest to that point, the Rebels loaded the bases. Hughes walked. Randle walked. Iowa changed pitchers - left-hander Brant Hogue for right-hander Anthony Watts, who had entered for Brecht to start the sixth. Groff singled to left to load the bases. A fly ball to left by Fischer scored a run, and it was 7-3.

Groff and Randle advanced to second and third respectively. After that, a Jackson Ross fly ball to center scored Randle, and it was 7-4. After Bo Gatlin and Lege walked to score Groff and Gatlin to make it 7-6, Iowa changed pitchers - righthander Jack Young for Hogue - and John Kramer walked followed by a base on balls by Hill.

Left-hander Elliott Cadieux-Lanoue replaced Young, and Reagan Burford walked to score Lege and tie the game 7-7. A strikeout ended the rally.

In the top of the ninth, Tello singled to center and the original call was an out that was caught by Groff. The door was opened with Tello at first instead of out, and when the top of the inning was over, Iowa scored six and led 13-7.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Rebels loaded the bases for the fourth time in the game but were not able to get runs across.

Reliever Connor Spencer (0-1), a right-hander who started the ninth but got just one out while allowing six runs, got the loss for the Rebels. Cadieux-Lanoue (2-0) was the Hawkeye winner.

The Ole Miss starter, left-hander Gunnar Dennis, went five innings allowing five earned runs on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Davis was the first of six pitchers in the contest for Ole Miss.

Hughes and Groff had two hits each for the Rebels, while four Hawkeyes - Ben Wilmes, Tello, Cop, and Kyle Huckstorf - had two hits each.

The two teams continue their series at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
