TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country will look for another chance at history when it puts the season on the line at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, hosted this Saturday morning at Indiana State's LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
Ole Miss is one of 19 programs this season to have qualified both its men's and women's teams, and one of just seven in the nation to have done so the past four years alongside Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, NC State, Oregon and Stanford. Not only have both Rebel squads qualified for the national meet these last four years, but when they've been there they've produced results. Ole Miss stands alongside those same schools as the only programs to have placed both men's and women's teams in the national top-25 at the NCAA Championships in each of the last three years.
The Rebels are in the midst of a cross country renaissance under track & field and cross country head coach Connie Price-Smith and associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy, who have brought both the men's and women's programs to new heights. After having never qualified for NCAAs prior to 2014, the Ole Miss men are now on their sixth consecutive trip to the national meet – the pinnacle of which was a fourth-place podium finish the last time the NCAA Championships were in Terre Haute in 2016. The Rebel men have been excellent as of late, taking the last two SEC Championship crowns (the first two conference titles in program history) and four of the last six NCAA South Region titles.
After a dominant 55-point win at the SEC Championships (the largest margin of victory in the conference since 2015) and the South Region title, Vanhoy was named both the SEC Men's Coach of the Year and the USTFCCCA Men's South Region Coach of the Year.
Ole Miss has been equally as historic on the women's side of competition, qualifying for the NCAA Championships each of the last four seasons (after having never qualified prior to 2016) and finishing at least third at the SEC Championships in the same time span (after never finishing in the top-three prior to 2016).
Regarded as one of the finest and most challenging cross country courses in the nation, LaVern Gibson has been the site of 12 NCAA Championship meets since 2002 prior to the 13th iteration this weekend. Recent cold spells in Mississippi could prove beneficial for the Rebels, as the current projected racetime temperature in Terre Haute on Saturday morning is 36 degrees with steady rain showers in the forecast. The Rebel women will run first in the championship 6K race at 10:15 a.m. CT, followed by the men's championship 10K at 11:15 a.m. CT. Fans can watch the action live with a subscription to FloTrack.

Ole Miss is coming off the highest national finish in program history after taking 22nd place in 2018, and it returns six runners that were on that squad: junior Anna Elkin, junior Maddie King, senior Maddie McHugh, junior Victoria Simmons, sophomore Ylvi Traxler and sophomore Lisa Vogelgesang. After never qualifying for the NCAA Championships prior to 2016, the Rebel women will be looking for their fourth-straight top-25 team finish at the national meet following a 23rd-place finish in 2016 and 25th-place finish in 2017 before last season's 22nd-place slot.
The Rebels are without their top runner from that historic outing, 65th-place finisher Clio Ozanne-Jaques, who has missed the entire 2019 season due to injury. The Rebels have remained steady without her, though, using four different top runners in six meets this season.
Maddie King was the top runner for Ole Miss in three different meets this season, including the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute back on Oct. 19. Victoria Simmons took hold of the reigns at the SEC Championships, earning Second-Team All-SEC honors in 14th place to help lead the Rebel women to a program-high second place finish. Last week at the NCAA South Regional, it was Anna Elkin that took hold of the top spot, finishing 10th to lead four All-Region finishers for Ole Miss.

Waleed Suliman
Ole Miss enters Saturday ranked No. 9 in the nation on the men's side, the second-highest national ranking in program history and the highest ranking ever for the Rebel men heading into the NCAA Championships. Much of that has to do with the deep, talented roster the Rebels have run this season, but none more influential than the steady top-three of Farah Abdulkarim, Cade Bethmann and Waleed Suliman. The trio were the top three finishers for Ole Miss at both the SEC Championships and the NCAA South Regional, with all three running across the finish line within two tenths of a second to help the Rebels win the regional meet for the fourth time in the last six years.
Waleed Suliman returns as the top runner from the 2018 NCAA roster, when he placed 36th overall to become the fifth Rebel to earn All-American honors as one of the top-40 finishers. Suliman was also the third-place finisher this season at the SEC Championships, vying for the individual SEC title until the finish line and helping the Rebel men in their dominant conference championship win. At Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute earlier this season, Suliman finished 12th overall to help lead the Rebel men to a fifth-place team finish.
All three Rebels earned First-Team All-SEC and All-NCAA South Region honors, but they weren't alone. Cole Bullock was named SEC Freshman of the Year and a Second-Team All-SEC member alongside junior Michael Coccia, who was joined by sophomore Mario Garcia Romo on the All-Region team as well.
